Newcastle fans on Twitter have flocked to a tweet from Amanda Staveley’s husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi regarding the reported plans to cut the Premier League down to 18 teams.
As per the BBC, the Premier League are concerned about the recent proposals, which have been led by Liverpool and Manchester United, which would see the top flight being cut down to 18 teams, with the bottom two sides relegated to the Championship, whilst the 16th-placed team would join the Championship play-offs.
The proposals would also see the Premier League hand over 25% of its revenue from a season to the EFL, with the League Cup and Community Shield scrapped.
It is also suggested that parachute payments for sides relegated from the Premier League would be scrapped, whilst a £250 million rescue fund would be made available to the EFL, with £100 million also paid to the FA to make up for the revenue lost during the current viral outbreak (per BBC).
Do you think the takoever could still go through?
Yes
No
However, it seems as if not all fans are keen on this idea, with Ghodoussi, who is the husband of Amanda Staveley – whose Saudi-based consortium withdrew its bid to buy the North East club earlier in the year, tweeting:
‘Monopolies destroy competition….what makes the Premier League the best league in the world is seasons like 2015/16.’
Reaction from Newcastle fans to the post from Ghodoussi can be seen in the tweets below.

Mehrdad you have no idea how much you and Amanda will be worshipped here on Tyneside when you eventually take over this club. Keep up the fight, we are all behind you

Let’s hope it gets knocked on the head and #NUFC have yourself, Amanda, the Reuben’s and the Saudi’s as our new owners soon. The proposed change to the PL will destroy English football for good and shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

Overall, it seems as if the majority of Newcastle fans are still keen for the takeover to go through at some point, based on their replies to Ghodoussi’s tweet.
Few supporters seemingly made note of the initial point that Ghodoussi was making regarding the proposal which is being led by Liverpool and Manchester United.
