Many Newcastle United fans have slammed the performance of Jonjo Shelvey in the club’s game against Newport County in the fourth round of the League Cup.
Shelvey did find the back of the net for the Magpies on Wednesday. Newcastle had fallen behind in the fifth minute of the game and Shelvey’s equaliser came in the 87th minute of the tie.
In the penalty shootout that followed, Newport’s Brandon Cooper missed his spot-kick. Steve Bruce’s men won the shootout 5-4 and sealed a spot for themselves in the quarter-finals of the competition (as per BBC Sport).
Despite the fact that Shelvey scored a goal, many Newcastle fans weren’t happy with his performance on Wednesday. They made their anger very clear on Twitter.
Dunno about the rest of you but I think we need to call it a day with Jonjo Shelvey #NUFC

Was Shelvey poor against Newport?
Yes
No
I’d stick him in the reserves but think that would be an insult to them!

100% agree, Flashes when he can actually be bothered but most of the time has no influence on games! Needs replacing

Said it for years, Hollywood balls and constantly out of position. So slow in playing the ball which kills what little momentum we have

Shelvey joined Newcastle from Swansea in January 2016 for a fee of £14.4 million and he has previously plied his trade with Liverpool.
In the current campaign, the Englishman has made four appearances in all competitions and three of those appearances have come in the Premier League (as per Transfermarkt).
Some other Toon fans also made their negative opinion clear about Shelvey’s performance.
Apart from his goal Shelvey was abysmal tonight. can’t help but think we need to get rid at some point. Absolute Passenger 90% of the time

Can we transfer list Shelvey and keep Saivet? Honestly think he’d be a better fit in the team

The 28-year-old Shelvey came up with a tally of six key passes for Newcastle on Wednesday. He completed a single tackle and made one clearance as well (as per Whoscored).
This shows that apart from scoring the equaliser, Shelvey was pretty effective in the game, meaning that some criticism of him may have been unjustified.
