Many Newcastle fans have flocked to a Twitter post from journalist Fabrizio Romano in which he says the Magpies approached Lazio and Ciro Immobile about the possibility of the 30-year-old joining the club at the start of the summer transfer window.
He also goes on to say that this was confirmed by the player himself and the Premier League club were willing to offer him a five-year contract worth €5.5m (£4.9m) per season.
The Lazio striker enjoyed an excellent 2019/20 season, scoring 36 goals in 37 Serie A appearances. He also contributed eight assists and as a result of his impressive form, he was awarded the Golden Boot, matching Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals in a single Serie A campaign (as per BBC Sport).
What did the Newcastle faithful have to say following Romano’s tweet regarding Immobile?
Fabrizio why are you doing this to the Toon, we were happy with Callum Wilson and you’re waving a world class goalscorer in the faces of United supporters everywhere. Have we not been through enough?

It’s clear from the above responses that most of these Newcastle United supporters were left disappointed reading what Romano had to say regarding the negotiations that took place for Immobile earlier in the year. However, one supporter challenged the viewpoint of another by suggesting that the Italy international’s career statistics do not prove he is a world-class player, here is what he had to say:
World class???? Those figures don’t put him in that category sorry. He’s unproven in England… Italian league is garbage in comparison mate ????? pic.twitter.com/cy9vBp5y5w

The £40.5m-rated forward scored and provided an assist in Lazio’s win over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, highlighting that contrary to this fans opinion of him, he is capable of producing at the highest level.
