After the news was relayed to Newcastle fans on social media, lots of supporters flocked to it to air their frustration.
So, what did these Newcastle fans have to say about Lee Mason’s appointment for the match against Wolves?

Personally this is one ref I do always feel gives a lot against us. Not happy.
I’ll say it’s a penalty this game.

Another notch in the Loss column then
with him as ref.— Colinv2401 (@Baberton33) October 21, 2020
As stated in the post on the Toon’s website, while Mason has not refereed a Newcastle match so far this term, he oversaw four of their games last season.
Are you unhappy with the appointment of Lee Mason?
No, he's not that bad
Yes, he's an awful referee
Oh dear, anyone but him.

During the current campaign, Mason has been the man in the middle for four fixtures between the Premier League and the Carabao Cup (per Transfermarkt).
Across the four matches, the referee has dished out ten yellow cards and zero red cards. Interestingly, the home side has won in all four of the games.

Up there with Trelford Mills and Keith Stroud as being the most disliked referee to officiate an NUFC match. https://t.co/KbPh5UTIXs

As can be seen in what these Newcastle fans had to say after the club relayed the news, they were evidently unhappy with the appointment of Mason.
