How well do you remember the action from the opening weekend of the Premier League? - 1. Who scored the first goal of the season?

One of the teams that the journalist spent some time on was Manchester United and, in particular, their pursuit of Jadon Sancho that ended in failure.

The Red Devils did not meet Borussia Dortmund’s asking price for the England winger, while it appears he will be staying in the Bundesliga for at least another season, and O’Rourke feels that Manchester United have now missed out on their chance to sign Sancho.

It seems O’Rourke feels as if next summer there will be more competition for Sancho, and if the Red Devils don’t get in the Champions League, he can’t see the former Manchester City man moving to Old Trafford.

He said: “They had the summer-long pursuit of Jadon Sancho, which failed to happen and a lot of people [are] unhappy with United’s whole transfer policy.

“[They] wasted a lot of time on Sancho and have they now missed out on their opportunity to get him? Because I think, come around next summer, [there are] probably going to be a lot of clubs looking at Sancho, especially if he has a good season for Dortmund, a good Euros with England next summer.

“There’s going to be a lot of demand for the winger, and if United do struggle this season, miss out on the Champions League, they’re unlikely to be able to get Jadon Sancho.”

Do you think the Red Devils have missed their chance with Sancho?

TIF Thoughts…

United failed to bring in Sancho or Ousmane Dembele in the end and instead signed two young wingers in Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri.

Sancho was thought to be the top target, and personal terms were reportedly agreed, but the Red Devils would not meet Dortmund’s asking price and thought that the price was a bluff from the Bundesliga side by banking on the German club lowering their €120m (£109.1m) demands.

It may then be fair to say that Manchester United’s long-drawn and futile attempts to sign Sancho were a shambles, and O’Rourke might be right to suggest that next summer, they may not be able to sign him if they have to see off more competition for his signature this time next year.
