Duncan Castles has been speaking on the latest edition of The Transfer Window podcast about topics relating to a number of Premier League clubs.
One of the teams that he spent some time on was Manchester United and discussed their deal for Edinson Cavani.
The Red Devils signed the 33-year-old on transfer deadline day, and Castles revealed what sort of wages the former PSG man is going to be on while he is at Old Trafford.
He claimed that Benfica, who were also interested in a move for Cavani, believe that the Red Devils offered more than their offer of €6m (£5.44m) per season, and various sources suggest that the Uruguayan is going to earn between €9-10m (£8.15-9.06m) each season while he is at United.
Castles said: “Benfica’s best offer to Cavani was €6m net, which is a very substantial sum for a Portuguese club. Benfica think that Manchester United paid more than that.
“Their information is that he was paid €9m for the first season and will get €8m net for the second season, plus a €9m signing bonus for joining Manchester United.
“The other guy who’s actually on record talking about this is Paulo Futre, who, importantly, was brokering the deal for Cavani to move to Benfica.
“He talked on Portuguese television recently about the contract offer from Manchester United and he said he was shown it by Cavani’s brother during a meeting they had in Lisbon.
“He said the offer was actually for €10m net plus €2m of bonuses.
“Information I have from France is of a similar figure; around €10m a season, net.
“So, you’re talking about a very substantial salary for a player who ultimately, none of the other top clubs in Europe were prepared to take on board.”
Do you think Cavani will be a good signing?
No, huge wages and injury prone
Yes, he could be a great signing
TIF Thoughts on Edinson Cavani’s substantial wages reveal…
This seems like a lot of money for a player who is 33 and has already said that he wants to play in Argentina for Boca Juniors.
However, Cavani has an incredible goalscoring record for both PSG and Napoli, so you can see why the Red Devils signed him.
However, his wages are huge, and considering he has had injury problems in the past, this could prove to be an unwise move from Manchester United.
We will just have to see if Cavani can prove he is worth the wages that the Red Devils have splashed out on him.
