Liverpool journalist James Pearce has been sharing some insight on Reds defender Virgil van Dijk and the injury he picked up during the Merseyside derby at the weekend.

This comes after Pearce recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about the biggest news topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

On the topic of Van Dijk’s injury that he suffered after a bad tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, and Liverpool’s standpoint on it, Pearce had this to say on the matter.

He said: “The club’s standpoint certainly is that they won’t fully know until after he’s had the surgery, what the rehab programme is going to look like I think that they’re going to schedule that surgery later on this week.

“I think a torn ACL we know that [it] could be anything from seven months to nine months [out of action]. Liverpool are keen not to rule him out for the rest of the season and say there’s still a chance but I’d be very surprised if we saw Virgil van Dijk back in a Liverpool shirt before next season.”

As Pearce mentioned in the podcast, the official Liverpool club website announced that Van Dijk will have to undergo surgery to fix his knee before then taking part in a rehabilitation programme to help him get back to full fitness.

TIF Thoughts on James Pearce’s comments on Van Dijk’s injury…

Listening to what Pearce had to say on the podcast, it would appear that Liverpool fans shouldn’t get their hopes up at seeing Van Dijk back in action for the club at any point before the end of the current season.

However, it’s good to hear that the club has put plans in place to help Van Dijk overcome this injury. Hopefully, his surgery will go according to plan and then he can work on his recovery.
