Liverpool journalist James Pearce has been sharing his thoughts on the recent transfer rumours linking the Merseyside club with a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.

This comes after Pearce recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Liverpool-themed podcast The Red Agenda where he spoke about a number of topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

On the topic of these rumours linking the Reds with a move for Butland, Pearce had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I had to laugh when I saw headlines at the weekend about Jack Butland and we’re talking about a goalkeeper that can’t even get in Stoke City’s team, so the idea that Liverpool are going to suddenly go and spend money to bring him in would be just nonsensical.”

The 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £5.85 million, has made a total of 168 senior appearances for Stoke in which he has conceded a total of 235 goals and managed to keep just 50 clean sheets along the way (per Transfermarkt).

As Pearce mentioned in the podcast, Butland has yet to make an appearance for Stoke so far this season having only been on the bench for their opening four league games.

The 2019/20 season was a poor one for Butland after earning himself a disappointing season rating of 6.21/10 for his performances in the 35 league appearances he made for the club (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

Given how poor Butland was for Stoke last season and the fact that he hasn’t played a minute of action for them this season, it comes as no surprise that Pearce has dismissed the rumours linking the shot-stopper with a move to Anfield.

Also, with the club currently having Alisson Becker, Adrian and Caoimhin Kelleher in their squad that all play in the goalkeeping position, maybe adding Butland to their squad perhaps isn’t the most necessary move the Reds could make.
