Speaking on a recent episode of The Red Agenda podcast, Simon Hughes discussed whether or not he believed Wolverhampton Wanderers defender, Conor Coady, would be a good signing for Liverpool.

Since moving to Wolves from Huddersfield Town in what was a £2.52 million deal back in 2015, Coady has gone on to feature 242 times for the club, chipping in with two goals and providing seven assists along the way.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

Mark Lawrenson recently stated his belief that the £22.5 million-rated 27-year-old would be a good signing for Liverpool, the club where Coady began his career, as a replacement for the injured Virgil van Dijk, who looks to be sidelined for a considerable amount of time.

And, the idea of Coady joining Liverpool was one subject of conversation on a recent episode of The Red Agenda podcast, in which Hughes stated that he does not believe the Wolves defender would be a good fit for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He said: “The success that he’s had at Wolves has been in the middle of a back three, where he’s had pace either side of him. That’s not to say that Conor Coady is a slow player, but I think it’d be a big adjustment for him to go play in a back four. Jurgen Klopp has only used a back three on maybe two or three occasions since he’s become Liverpool manager. So, it’d be a big departure for Jurgen Klopp and the team to switch to the shape that Coady is used to. Then, vice-versa, he would have to adjust to a new system.

“His career has really taken off, he’s had a great career since leaving Liverpool and I’ve got huge amounts of respect for him to go to another club and reinvent himself a little bit. He’s obviously become a leader in a Wolves team which have really impressed me every time I’ve seen them play.

“He’s got such a high status at Wolves at this time, he’s such an important player, they wouldn’t want to let him go. So, I’d imagine that they’d be asking for a big sum for a player who isn’t naturally used to playing in the system Jurgen Klopp’s team plays, so [I] probably would rule him out. I’d be surprised if they went for him.”

TIF Thoughts on Simon Hughes’ comments regarding Conor Coady…

From Hughes’ comments, it is clear that the journalist is of the belief that Coady would not be a good fit for Klopp’s side, as the defender predominantly plays in a back three for his current team, in addition to the fact that Coady is an important part of his Wolves side, and thus, they would not likely be keen on the idea of letting him leave.

As such, in Hughes’ opinion, it would seem that a Liverpool move for Coady may not be on the cards in January.
