Peter Harris has been discussing a number of options for the centre-back position at Liverpool on a recent edition of the Blood Red podcast with Virgil van Dijk facing a lengthy lay-off having suffered an injury in the recent Merseyside derby at Everton.

One of the player’s Harris mentioned was Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa. The 23-year-old, London-born defender joined the Birmingham-based club in July 2019 from Brentford (as per Transfermarkt). So far this season he has started all of the club’s Premier League games, contributing a goal in the win over Sheffield United.

First up in this Steven Gerrard quiz, how old is the former Liverpool man?

It appears that the journalist is a fan of the £10.8m-rated defender and he drew some comparisons with the man we believe to be Jurgen Klopp’s defensive leader, here is what he had to say:

“Aston Villa’s Konsa is a player that actually has interested me once. I’ve seen him, he’s actually got very similar stats to Van Dijk, he’s got more clean sheets, he’s actually had more aerial battles won this season and he’s contributed one goal already.”

TIF Thoughts on Peter Harris’ comments regarding Ezri Konsa…

According to WhoScored, Konsa’s average performance rating in the Premier League this season stands at an impressive 7.28/10 and therefore you can understand why he has caught Harris’ eye. Dean Smith’s Aston Villa have lost just once so far this season and sit in third place and so in our view, it is understandable as to why the likes of Konsa are capturing the attention of those outside of the club.

Liverpool currently, in our view, appear worryingly short at centre-back with Joel Matip recently missing the win over Sheffield United, with his questionable injury record, that leaves just Joe Gomez and Sepp van den Berg as natural options for Jurgen Klopp unless they are able to add to their squad when the transfer window opens in January.
