The Athletic reporter Patrick Boyland has discussed Everton’s interest in signing Manchester United’s Sergio Romero and Tottenham Hotspur’s Paulo Gazzaniga.

On Monday, the Toffees secured the arrival of AS Roma stopper Robin Olsen on a season-long loan from the Serie A outfit (per Sky Sports).

As claimed in this report by the Mirror, though, Carlo Ancelotti’s side were also discussing potential deals for Romero and Gazzaniga.

The Goodison Park club reportedly wanted to bring one of the two Argentines in on loan, however, neither player ended up on Merseyside.

So, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s Gwlad Tidings podcast, Boyland discussed Everton’s efforts to sign the two players and explained why they ultimately did not happen.

To kick off this quiz on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, what is his current squad number for the Toffees?

He said: “On transfer deadline day, Everton explored options for a number of goalkeepers – Paulo Gazzaniga from Tottenham and Sergio Romero from Manchester United – both of whom they would have preferred on loan but couldn’t agree deals for.

“I think Tottenham’s preference was for a permanent sale. Manchester United’s preference, as well, was for a permanent sale of Romero.

“It’s a shame that [Romero] didn’t work out, because while Olsen probably doesn’t have the pedigree to come in and immediately challenge Jordan Pickford – I think Sergio Romero would have done.

“I do like Sergio Romero and of the three goalkeepers that were mentioned to us yesterday, personally, he would have been my preference.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what Boyland had to say, the Toffees evidently wanted to sign a goalkeeper on loan, however, the Red Devils and Spurs wanted permanent transfers.

Of the three goalkeepers, which would you rather Everton had signed on loan?

Romero

Romero

Gazzaniga

Gazzaniga

Olsen

Olsen

While Boyland claimed that he would have preferred Romero of the three goalkeeping options, Gazzaniga has by far the most experience in the Premier League.

Olsen is yet to make an appearance in the English top flight, while Romero has only made seven Premier League appearances and Gazzaniga has made 43.

However, the Manchester United ‘keeper has kept far more clean sheets during his career with 120, whereas Olsen has kept 93 and Gazzaniga has 46.

So, perhaps it is clear to see why the journalist was keen on the idea of signing the Red Devils’ Argentine stopper.
