Ryan Dilks and Justin Peach discussed all of the latest incoming and outgoing transfers concerning Championship clubs during the most recent edition of the Second Tier podcast and they spent some time talking about Jack Butland following his recent transfer from Stoke City to Crystal Palace during the show.

This transfer occurred on last Friday’s domestic transfer deadline. As per Sky Sports, the Eagles paid ‘an initial fee of £1m, which could rise significantly with add-ons’ for the former England international who was recruited by the south London club after their number two goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey recently ‘suffered a heel injury on international duty with Wales.’

Dilks and Peach shared their thoughts on Palace’s Butland capture during this recent edition of the Second Tier podcast and here is what Peach had to say about the player following this move:

“He’s a likeable goalkeeper and he had a lot of potential at one point and I think his form has dipped, that coincided with Stoke’s form dipping and while Stoke are just starting to recover now, I don’t think Butland has recovered from it – which is a massive shame because, for me, he’s a really likeable goalkeeper.”

Dilks then aired his thoughts on Butland’s recent form and his future, saying: “He had a terrible year last season, didn’t he? It was one of the worst seasons I’ve ever seen from a goalkeeper and when you take into account his stature as well in English football – it’s a massive shame isn’t it?

“Whether he’ll manage to get back to his best at Crystal Palace, I’m not too sure. I think he might just be a backup for Vicente Guaita for the time being. Sad to see.”

TIF Thoughts on these podcasters’ comments about Butland…

So, clearly, these podcasters were not impressed by Butland’s form for Stoke last season, which may be understandable when you consider that he earned an overall WhoScored rating of just 6.21 for the Potters in the Championship last season, which is the joint-sixth lowest overall WhoScored rating that was earned by any ‘keeper in England’s second-tier during the 2019/20 campaign, with Butland playing more games than all of the goalkeepers to have earned a lower overall season rating than him.

This is also the lowest overall WhoScored season rating that the 27-year-old stopper has earned in the entirety of his club career, so with that in mind, it may be understandable why both of these podcasters seem uncertain about how the player will fare with his new club.

It will be interesting to see if Butland can revive his career following his move to Premier League Palace or if the former England international’s best days are behind him.
