Crystal Palace podcaster, columnist and ex-coach Adam Sells appeared on the most recent edition of the FYP Podcast where he joined Travis Endeacott, Jim Daly and Andy Street to discuss all things Crystal Palace.

The panel spent some time talking about the Eagles’ recent transfer business during the show. As per Transfermarkt, Palace are the only Premier League club who have turned a profit on their transfer business thus far in the 2020/21 campaign.

Crystal Palace fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Palace 19/20 season quiz. We'll start off with an easy one... Which side did Palace face on the opening day of the 19/20 Premier League season?

The South London club received £18m from the sale of Alexander Sorloth to RB Leipzig, while they have spent a total of just £17.01m to make four new permanent additions to their squad for the 2020/21 season.

One caveat with these figures is that West Bromwich Albion are still due compensation from Palace for Nathan Ferguson, who joined the Eagles during the summer, however, even with that in mind, it’s evident that Palace haven’t been one of the Premier League’s big spenders this term and during this recent edition of the FYP Podcast, Sells slammed the club’s recent transfer spending.

He said: “I’ve heard people say it was a good transfer window. We signed a loan striker, a player from the Championship, a right-back who’s injured and a free agent right-back and a cover goalkeeper.

“We still haven’t really spent the money at the top end of the pitch that’s really required for us to move forward.

“I don’t honestly think that anybody should expect better than between sort of 12th and 15th, probably, in the Premier League, given what we’ve got.

“I’m not saying to you, ‘we haven’t got some good players’ – we have – but I think everyone else has as well and I think that’s missed by quite a lot of people.”

TIF Thoughts on what Sells had to say about Palace’s recent transfer business…

So, judging by his comments, it’s clear that Sells doesn’t think Palace have done enough in the transfer market to improve greatly, if at all, on their 14th-place finish on the Premier League table last season and given that they currently sit in 14th place on the league table, this may be difficult to argue with.

While Palace got their 2020/21 league campaign off to a positive start, they are now without a win in their last three league games so perhaps this gives us an indication that their squad doesn’t have enough quality to produce the level of consistency required to push too far beyond their current position on the Premier League table.

However, it is still early days in the season so perhaps we will have to just wait and see how the Eagles perform as the campaign progresses in order to properly assess the quality of their squad and whether or not they did enough during the most recent transfer window.
