Speaking on a recent episode of the HLTCO podcast, Dan Cook discussed comments made by Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend regarding the future of fellow Palace player Wilfried Zaha.

Townsend’s comments, which were made while speaking on TalkSPORT (via Read Crystal Palace), Townsend discussed Zaha’s desire to leave the club over the summer transfer window, claiming that the 27-year-old ‘believes that he was destined for bigger things’, something which Townsend claimed that he ‘agreed with’, before going on to state that if the winger ‘does get 15-20 goals’ this season, that he is ‘sure he will get his move’ away from Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old’s comments were one topic of conversation on a recent episode of the HLTCO podcast, in which Cook criticised the remarks of Townsend, as he believes the idea the player puts forward may not go down well with fans of the club.

He said: “That quote, in general, is a bit of a tricky one to look at. Because, on one hand, you can say that his analysis of Wilf’s game and everything else around it is spot-on – because Andros is right in the fact that [Zaha] has been afforded more space this season, he’s playing in that more advanced role and has more goals to his name because of it.

“But, when you have a first-team player in Andros’ position, someone that was so pivotal to our victory away at Fulham last weekend, talking up his teammate, and indeed, the best player in our team – there’s no denying that fact – with the idea that he will secure a move away from the football club if he continues to play well, it’s just not going to sit particularly well with a section of our fans.”

TIF Thoughts on Dan Cook’s comments regarding Andros Townsend’s remarks…

From Cook’s comments, it is clear that the podcaster is of the belief that Townsend’s comments are somewhat disruptive, as he feels that one of Zaha’s teammates openly talking about the fact that the winger could go on to secure a move away from the club if he is to play well this season is not something that some of the Palace fans are going to be overly keen on.

In our opinion, this is a valid point, as from the perspective of a fan, you’d imagine one would like to see a player giving their all for your club in order for your side to have the best chance of success, rather than them simply playing well in order to go on and secure a move elsewhere, which, from Townsend’s comments, it would appear he is suggesting Zaha could be doing.
