Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has been sharing his thoughts on the Birmingham club’s current squad depth.

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-themed podcast 1874 where he spoke about a number of different topics concerning Dean Smith’s side.

First up in this quiz on Gabriel Agbonlahor, how old is the former Villa man?

On the topic of Villa’s current crop of players, Evans had this to say on the matter.

He said: “I think that if Villa can keep this XI fit, I think they’ve probably got maybe 13 players, they’ve got a real strong 13 players. After that, you think it’s dropping down into more of the bottom half. It’s more of a bottom-half team rather than a top-half team, if you’re having to dip into the players that are outside of that 13.

“That would be the only concern for me.

“The focus now is very much on the Premier League, there is not a huge amount of games and if they can keep everybody fit, then who’s to say they can’t have a real good crack at finishing high up in the division this year.”

Villa currently have 26 players in their senior squad with a total market value of £280.62 million, making it the 10th most valuable squad in the Premier League (per Transfermarkt).

The Birmingham club significantly added to their squad throughout the recent summer transfer window by signing Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash, Emiliano Martinez and Bertrand Traore on permanent deals as well as Ross Barkley on loan.

On the pitch, Villa have had a perfect start to their 2020/21 Premier League campaign after winning all four of their opening league fixtures, scoring 12 goals and conceding two in the process.

TIF Thoughts on Gregg Evans’ comments on Villa’s squad…

It’s good to hear that Evans thinks that Villa have a fair number of players in their squad that are worthy of finishing in the top half of the Premier League table.

Given how Villa currently have a 100% win record in the league so far, if they can keep getting positive results, they have every chance of finishing in the top half, as Evans said in the podcast.
