Charles Watts, the Arsenal correspondent for Goal, has been discussing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s fitness ahead of the club’s upcoming trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City during a recent YouTube video

The 31-year-old striker pulled out of the Gabon squad ahead of their recent friendly with Benin (as per Goal) after he sustained an ankle injury during the Gunners’ recent victory over Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Mikel Arteta’s captain, however, according to Watts, is in contention to face Pep Guardiola’s side next Saturday evening. Here is what he had to say when providing an update on the former Borussia Dortmund man:

“Aubameyang had been suffering with his ankle injury that stopped him linking up with Gabon over the international break, but my information was that he is okay, he has been training, it was just a precaution why he didn’t go with Gabon – so the skipper should be absolutely fine to play Manchester City.”

TIF Thoughts on Aubameyang injury update…

The forward has scored an incredible 72 goals in 114 Arsenal appearances to date (as per Transfermarkt), highlighting how important he is to the team – so if he is available, it will come as a huge boost to Arteta.

Are you confident Arsenal can get a result at Manchester City?

In the last meeting between the two clubs, which came in last season’s FA Cup semi-final, Aubameyang’s brace booked the north London club’s place in the final which they went on to win thanks to another double from the £50.4m-rated attacker. Following Arsenal’s success at the back end of the 2019/20 campaign, the player committed his future to the club by signing a three-year contract extension (as per BBC Sport).

The FA Cup holders may already be five points clear of Manchester City but in our view, they will still need to be at their best in order to take all three points back to London – and we feel with Aubameyang in the side, Arsenal are a far better outfit.
