Dom Howson and James Marriott discussed all things Sheffield Wednesday on the most recent edition of the Singing The Blues podcast and during the show, the journalists spent some time talking about Jordan Rhodes.

After starting Wednesday’s first two games of the 2020/21 Championship campaign, scoring in one of them, Rhodes didn’t start the Owls’ most recent league game – last weekend’s 2-0 loss to Bristol City and the striker was also the last substitute that Wednesday used in that game, making it onto the pitch for just the final six minutes of the contest, as per Transfermarkt.

To kick off this week's EFL quiz, who is the top goalscorer in the Championship following game week three?

In addition to that, the Owls have recently completed the signing of a new centre forward, Callum Paterson, and during this recent edition of Singing The Blues, Howson shared some uncertainty about Rhodes and the significance of the role he will play at the Yorkshire club this term, based on last week’s league game and the Owls’ recent signing of Paterson.

He said: “I think we can read a lot into it after three matches. I think the fact that Garry Monk didn’t turn to Jordan Rhodes – he was the last sub that he put on at Bristol City, again, I thought was another telltale sign.

“When you’re trying to rescue the game, when it’s only 1-0 and then he only gives Jordan Rhodes the last 10 minutes or so – I think Garry Monk’s made his mind up.

“We’ll talk about the new signing that Wednesday have made very shortly but where does Jordan Rhodes fit in? It just pushes him further down the pecking order for me, really.

“Now that Wednesday have brought another forward in, and in all probability, in the next two weeks that the window’s open, they’re going to bring in maybe another striker on top of that, Jordan Rhodes is not going to get that much game time, is he?”

TIF Thoughts…

Rhodes has featured in five of the Owls’ six games in all competitions so far this term and considering that he started their first two league fixtures of the 2020/21 campaign, we feel it may be a bit soon to come to the conclusion that he isn’t “going to get that much game time” this season.

However, if Howson is right in saying that Wednesday will dip back into the market for another striker during the current transfer window, then it will be interesting to see if the £1.44m-rated 30-year-old does get pushed “further down the pecking order” as the journalist believes he will.
