The Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Scott McDermott joined Jonny McFarlane on the latest edition of the Record Rangers podcast and the pair spent some time discussing the Gers’ interest in Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy during the show.

This comes after McDermott recently wrote an article confirming that the Glasgow-based club ‘are keeping close tabs on’ the Toon attacker. It was also claimed that Newcastle United ‘are open to offers’ for the £3.15 million-rated man.

The journalist provided details on the extent of the Gers’ interest in Murphy during his recent appearance on the Record Rangers podcast, saying: “I wrote a few weeks ago that there’s an interest there in Jacob Murphy at Newcastle.

“He’s on a list, Rangers have looked at him, Steven Gerrard likes him, there’s nothing imminent with it, but he is on a list of potential targets should a space arise and Rangers need to move.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what the reporter had to say during this recent podcast appearance, it seems that while the Gers are interested in 25-year-old Murphy, as McDermott had previously claimed, nothing substantial is in the works with regards to an actual move to Ibrox for the player at the moment.

Since joining Newcastle United for £10.17 million back in July 2017, it may be fair to say that Murphy has not made much of an impact at St. James’ Park, as the attacker has scored just one goal and provided just three assists in 41 appearances for the Toon.

With that in mind, it mightn’t be too surprising if Newcastle are ‘open to offers’ for the player as McDermott has previously claimed.

Despite failing to make much of an impact for Newcastle thus far, Murphy enjoyed a fairly positive loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday in the 2019/20 campaign, as he scored nine goals and provided six assists in 39 Championship appearances for the Owls.

If Rangers believe that the English attacker could produce similar numbers to that in the Scottish Premiership, then maybe this would not be a bad move for Steven Gerrard’s side.
