The Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Scott McDermott joined Jonny McFarlane on the latest edition of the Record Rangers podcast and the pair spent some time discussing the Gers’ interest in Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu during the show.

Reports have linked the 26-cap South Africa international with a move to Ibrox during the current transfer window, with the Daily Record’s Mark Walker writing an article last month in which he claimed that Zungu ‘has been shunned by Amiens over his desire to leave the club.’

Rangers fan? We bet you can't get 100% in this Rangers 2019/20 season quiz. First up, which French side did Rangers beat at Ibrox 4-0 in a pre-season friendly?

After confirming that the Gers’ “priority” in the transfer market is signing a central midfielder, McDermott spent some time talking about the Glasgow-based club’s interest in the South African during this recent edition of the Record Rangers podcast.

He said: “The priority at the moment is another central midfielder.

“We know that there was certainly an interest in Bongani Zungu a few weeks ago, he was another one that they’d looked at.

“I know they’ve looked at a lot of footage of him and they’ve watched him closely at Amiens, but for one reason or another, they haven’t pursued that – or they’re not pursuing that at the moment.”

Would Zungu be a good signing for Rangers?

TIF Thoughts…

So, judging by what McDermott had to say during this recent podcast appearance, while the Gers have clearly had an interest in Zungu, with the Glasgow-based club seemingly having scouted the player thoroughly, it appears that an actual move for the player is not in the works at present, with McDermott stating that it seems as though Rangers are “not pursuing that at the moment”.

Since joining Amiens for £1.8 million in the summer of 2017, Zungu has played as a defensive midfielder more often than he has played in any other position for the French club.

We feel that his familiarity with the defensive midfield position could be a reason why the Gers are interested in signing him, as they do not currently have a great deal of depth in this area of the park.

However, Zungu didn’t enjoy a very positive 2019/20 campaign, earning an overall WhoScored rating of just 6.24 from his 21 Ligue 1 appearances for Amiens and with that in mind, we feel that the Gers may be better off moving for other targets instead.
