Podcaster John McGinley has recently criticised the comments that Celtic’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond has made about the club.

McGinley was a guest on the latest episode of The Grand Auld Podcast and the panel discussed many issues involving the Hoops. One topic of discussion was the latest interview that the Hoops’ majority shareholder Desmond recently gave to The Athletic. McGinley made it clear that he didn’t like what Desmond had to say.

Which player played the highest number of minutes in all competitions for Celtic in the 2019/20 season?

In the interview, Desmond had talked about the idea of Celtic and their Old Firm rivals playing in England. He said that he doesn’t know if the possibilities of that happening are over or not. He also claimed that Celtic and Rangers are amongst the top eight clubs in Great Britain and if those in England want to ‘maximise’ their revenues, then there has to be a British Premier League which could include Celtic.

When talking about Desmond’s interview, McGinley made it clear that he didn’t like what the club’s majority shareholder had to say.

He said: “For me, the interview was just like – I was cringing reading some of it. I don’t like this chat about going to England and all that. Honestly, if that’s the extent of Celtic’s ambition from the majority shareholder and from Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon, then we’ve got bigger problems than we thought, because I don’t see any chance of it happening anytime soon.

Should Celtic ever play in the Premier League?

He also said: “I didn’t really like his interview, I felt he seemed like a man out of touch with what’s going on at Celtic. It is good that he’s got a good relationship with Lennon, but for me, if he’s not going to be hands-on, don’t give interviews. It’s either all or nothing for me.”

TIF Thoughts…

The Sun have previously reported that back in 2011, the Old Firm bosses had planned to quit Scottish football and were looking to apply to join the Premier League.

So the idea of Celtic potentially playing in England isn’t something that only Desmond has talked about – it has been discussed in the past as well. If anything concrete gets done about it remains to be seen, but it is clear that McGinley won’t like that.
