Jonny McFarlane and Gavin Berry discussed all the latest Rangers news on the most recent edition of the Record Rangers podcast and during the show, the journalists spent some time talking about Preston North End’s Daniel Johnson, who the Gers are reportedly trying to sign.

Rangers have been linked with a move for the £2.52m-rated Preston midfielder of late, with recent reports claiming that the Glasgow-based club would like to complete this signing by the end of the week.

Rangers fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Gers transfer quiz. According to Transfermarkt, the £4.5million signing of which player has been the club's most expensive signing so far this summer?

During this recent edition of the Record Rangers podcast, McFarlane shared a positive assessment of Johnson while discussing what he believes the 27-year-old Jamaican would bring to Steven Gerrard’s side.

He said: “The defence, to me, is not the problem. The problem is middle to front and that’s what I think Gerrard realises and that’s why I think he’s still looking at this Daniel Johnson.

“He’s a guy who scored 12 goals last season in the Championship, I think he got eight assists – that’s playing for Preston, who are not one of the leading lights in the Championship.

“A guy with that creative quality who can come in and give you a bit of squad depth and a bit of class in the final third, I think that’s right.

“I just think that the big problem Rangers have, the big problem they’ve always had under Gerrard is quality middle to front. It’s killing teams off, it’s taking chances and it’s creating chances.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, judging by McFarlane’s comments, it seems as though he believes that Johnson could make a positive contribution for the Gers in terms of solving their “big problem” of creating and taking goalscoring chances.

As the journalist explained, the midfielder scored 12 goals and provided eight assists for Preston in the Championship last season, ending that season as his side’s top goalscorer and top assist provider in the league.

With that in mind, we feel that McFarlane’s assessment of the player and what he might bring to the Gers is correct and if Johnson can carry his form for Preston over to Rangers, should he make the move to Ibrox, then we feel that he could be an important signing for Gerrard’s side.
