Colin Armstrong hosted a recent edition of the Gersnet podcast and during the show, he spent some time talking about Rangers midfielder Steven Davis.

The Northern Ireland international played the entirety of Rangers’ 4-0 Premiership win over Dundee United last Saturday and as per WhoScored, the midfielder played the highest number of passes (78), the joint-second-highest number of accurate long-balls (four) and made the joint-second-highest number of interceptions (three) of any Gers player in this fixture.

Rangers fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Gers transfer quiz. According to Transfermarkt, the £4.5million signing of which player has been the club's most expensive signing so far this summer?

With that in mind, it may be fair to say that the 35-year-old, who is valued at £900k (as per Transfermarkt), delivered a positive performance in this past weekend’s league win and it may not come as a big surprise that Armstrong was full of praise for the midfielder during this recent edition of the Gersnet podcast.

The podcast host said: “Davis – he’s had a sort of up-and-down start to the season and I’ve seen lots of supporters write him off and say the legs have gone and all that kind of thing and he doesn’t have it in him to go through the full campaign and we’ll have to manage the amount of game time he gets.

“Then he goes and plays two internationals and comes back [on Saturday] and has an absolutely outstanding game.

“Part of me feels that we missed out on the best of Steven Davis because I think he was at his peak when he moved, and I think Southampton maybe got the best of him but I do sometimes think he’s a very, very underrated player.

“Even when he wasn’t at the age that he is now and he was at the club the first time around, you just got the feeling that he was someone that was kind of undervalued a wee bit by the supporters.

“I think his best days are behind him, but I think if you’ve got a young and fit Steven Davis, there’s a case to say he’s the best player in the top flight in Scotland.

“[On Saturday] he was outstanding and I just think we have a top, top player there.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what Armstrong had to say, it’s clear that he was impressed by Davis’ performance versus Dundee United and feels that the midfielder is somewhat underrated by Rangers supporters.

According to WhoScored, the midfielder delivered his best performance of the 2020/21 Premiership season so far against Dundee United so hopefully, for Davis and for the Gers, he can build on that performance and perhaps show that he does still have the ability to play a key role for the Glasgow-based club despite being 35 years old.
