Celtic legend Chris Sutton has recently been talking about Jonny Hayes and has criticised the club’s decision to let the player leave earlier this summer.

Sutton was a guest on the latest episode of the Record Celtic podcast and the panel discussed multiple issues involving the Bhoys. Sutton talked about Celtic’s decision to let Hayes leave earlier this summer and he described it as a ‘bizarre’ decision.

Which player played the highest number of minutes in all competitions for Celtic in the 2019/20 season?

Hayes had joined Celtic from Aberdeen in the summer of 2017 and after departing Parkhead earlier this summer, he returned to Pittodrie on a free transfer (as per Transfermarkt).

Sutton believes that the Hoops’ decision to let Hayes leave looks ‘more and more ridiculous’. He made his frustration very clear.

He said: “It’s making the decision to let Jonny Hayes go look more and more ridiculous as the weeks go by. Jonny Hayes wasn’t on £85,000 a week. He wasn’t a great burden to the wage structure at Celtic. It just seems bizarre, the whole situation.”

TIF Thoughts…

Hayes had played in multiple positions during his time at Celtic, where he had made 68 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and assisting seven times (as per Transfermarkt).

It is notable that he had played a fair amount of games in the left-back position and as things stand, Celtic have just one out-and-out option for that position in Greg Taylor. It had been reported earlier this month that signing a left-back is currently a priority for the Bhoys.

Hayes is therefore arguably someone who could have added depth at left-back. Given he could have done a job in other positions as well, it is understandable why Sutton regrets the fact that Celtic allowed the 33-year-old to leave Parkhead.
