The Athletic’s Tim Spiers has recently discussed the new contract of Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

On Sunday, it was announced by the Old Gold that the Portuguese manager had committed his ‘long-term future’ to Wolves by putting pen to paper on a new three-year deal (per Wolves).

The Molineux club appointed the former FC Porto boss in May 2017 and he signed his last contract extension with the club in 2018.

As stated by the Express and Star prior to the announcement of the 46-year-old manager’s new contract, there had been ‘fears’ over Espirito Santo’s future.

However, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s The Molineux View podcast, Spiers discussed the new contract and aired that it was not in any doubt.

To kick off this quiz on Wolves transfers, which player was the Old Gold's club-record transfer fee paid on according to Transfermarkt?

He said: “As far as I’m aware, everyone was very calm behind the scenes and it was just a matter of when.

“Nuno’s committed to Wolves, and he’s committed until the day he’s not. And the day he’s not, when he moves on for another club, I don’t think his contract would have anything to do with it, personally.

“Manager contracts work very differently to player contracts. [Marcelo] Bielsa was out of contract this summer, [Pep] Guardiola’s out of contract next summer.

“It doesn’t seem to [be] making any difference to those teams’ spending in terms of bringing players in and the commitment the managers [are] showing and it was the same with Nuno.

“I think it was just a matter of getting it done and obviously [the pandemic] got in the way of that, and then they tried to have a break in the summer.

“As soon as he came back from his break, it’s moved relatively quickly – discussions have gone briskly.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, it seems as though Nuno Santo’s new contract did not seem to be in any doubt from the club’s point of view.

Do you think Nuno Espirito Santo can make Wolves a Champions League club?

No, it will not happen

No, it will not happen

Yes, anything is possible

Yes, anything is possible

This will presumably be good news for Wolves supporters as the Old Gold have seen a meteoric rise since the Portuguese manager took over at Molineux.

Since Espirito Santo’s appointment in 2017, Wolves have been crowned champions of the Championship and finished seventh in the Premier League twice.

So, during his new three-year contract, it will be interesting to see how he can take the Old Gold further.
