The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has recently discussed the transfer link between West Ham United and Slavia Prague defender Vladimir Coufal.

According to a report from the Independent earlier this summer, the Irons were interested in acquiring the services of the Czech Republic international.

Alongside David Moyes’ outfit, the 28-year-old right-back also attracted interest from Premier League sides Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

Despite the interest from the two other top-flight sides, it was stated in the Independent’s report that West Ham were ‘ahead’ in the race to sign him and that Moyes was ‘keen to do a deal’.

However, in the latest episode of The Athletic’s U Irons podcast, Thomas discussed the transfer link with Coufal and provided an update.

To kick-off this quiz on David Moyes on the hard side, which club was his first game on the touchline at the London Stadium against?

He said: “In my opinion, that’s the priority, [they] have to sign a left-back. In terms of one player, there was interest in a right-back from Slavia Prague called Vladimir Coufal.

“The valuation was unrealistic for West Ham. Slavia Prague wanted like £8m for him and West Ham were like, ‘that’s not happening’.

“Barring that, [there’s not] very much activity on the transfer front.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the journalist had to say, clearly the Irons were interested in recruiting Coufal, however, they were priced out of making a bid.

Do West Ham need to sign a new right-back this summer?

No, it's not necessary

Yes, I think we need one

Despite the fact the defender has signed a contract extension recently and now has four years left on his deal with Slavia Prague, his market value only stands at £1.8m (per Transfermarkt).

So, if the Irons really were quoted a fee somewhere in the region of £8m to sign the Czech international, then perhaps it is no surprise that the club did not take their interest further.
