West Ham United insider @ExWHUemployee has recently made a claim regarding the Hammers’ reported interest in Swansea City’s Joe Rodon.

On Wednesday morning, Jacob Steinberg tweeted an update regarding some of David Moyes’ transfer targets.

According to The Guardian football reporter, the Irons have ‘had a look’ at the Welsh central defender, however, he would be ‘very expensive’.

The 22-year-old defender currently has two years left on his contract with the Swans and a market value of £1.8m, according to Transfermarkt.

In the latest episode of The West Ham Way podcast, @ExWHUemployee aired what he knew about Rodon and the club’s interest in him.

Who did West Ham United face in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Premier League season?

He said: “Now, I think we had some enquiries and they asked for a lot of money. I am led to believe that we could get him for about £12-15m, despite the fact that they’ve turned down bigger offers.

“I think Swansea are not in a good way financially and need to sell players. However, I sent that knowledge that I have of him on to David Sullivan.

“The response that I got to that revelational bit of news which I thought would help him [was], ‘We know the player well, in a year he could be very good.’

“So, I don’t really know what that means. I don’t really know if that means, ‘So, what? I don’t care.’

“If we know in a year’s time he’s going to be very good, why don’t we just sign him now?”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the club insider had to say, he believes that the Irons could get Rodon for around £12-15m and he has brought that to the attention of co-chairman David Sullivan.

Would you be happy if West Ham signed Joe Rodon from Swansea City?

No, he's not that good

No, he's not that good

Yes, he's a good player

Yes, he's a good player

Over two appearances in the Championship so far this season, the central defender certainly seems to have displayed his ability as he has picked up a 7.46/10 average rating (per WhoScored).

He has made an average of 1.5 tackles, 2 interceptions and 7 clearances over the two outings.

Those stats would make him the joint-third-best tackler, joint-best interceptor and the player with the most clearances in West Ham’s squad if he achieved the same for the Hammers in the Premier League – though it should be considered that he is currently playing at a lower level.

That said, based on his showing in the second tier so far this season, it certainly seems as though the Welshman is a talent.
