Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been sharing his thoughts on a potential transfer move from Tottenham Hotspur for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

This comes after Romano recently made a guest appearance on Spurs-themed podcast Last Word On Spurs where he spoke about a variety of transfer-related topics concerning the London club at the moment.

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

On the topic of Bailey, who has been linked with a move to Spurs in the past, Romano had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen is a name that Jose Mourinho likes so much and the Tottenham board are following, so I would keep this name as a possibility.

“The real problem for Tottenham is that Bayer Leverkusen don’t need money [at the] moment because they sold [Kai] Havertz to Chelsea, they sold also [Kevin] Volland to Monaco, so if you want to take out Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen, you have to pay.

“I think they want a bid of around €50 million or €60 million so we need to see what will happen with Bayer Leverkusen, but for sure, the player is appreciated by Jose Mourinho, is appreciated also by the board, so I will say he’s a possibility – but we need to wait to understand who will be the right name if Tottenham will decide to go for a winger.”

The 23-year-old, who is currently valued at £26.55 million, signed to the German club back in the 2017 January transfer window for a fee of £12.15 million from Belgian side KRC Genk.

During his time in Germany with Leverkusen, Jamaica international Bailey has made a total of 116 appearances for the club in which he has managed to score 24 goals and provide 15 assists along the way.

The 2019/20 Bundesliga season saw Bailey make 22 league appearances for Leverkusen in which he scored five goals and provided three assists.

His performances in those league appearances earned him a season rating of 6.70/10 (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

If what Romano has said is true about Mourinho and the Spurs board being big fans of Bailey, then this could be a sign that they would be willing to make a transfer move for the winger at some point in the future.

However, with the apparent uncertainty of whether or not Spurs will be looking to sign a winger this summer as Romano suggested, this could put a big question mark over a potential move for Bailey.
