Journalist Alasdair Gold has recently made a claim about Callum Wilson and whether Spurs were looking to sign him or not.

Gold was recently speaking about many things involving Spurs in the latest video on his YouTube channel. He spoke about multiple potential transfers for Spurs and one player that he focused on was Wilson. The journalist revealed that Wilson is someone who was on Spurs’ list for potential striker signings, but they felt that he was ‘too much of a risk’.

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

It has now been confirmed that Newcastle United have signed Wilson from Bournemouth for a fee of £20 million. The Englishman has now signed a four-year deal with the Magpies. TalkSport had previously reported that Spurs were interested in signing Wilson as well.

Speaking prior to Wilson’s move to Tyneside, Gold revealed that despite the fact that Wilson was on Spurs’ list of striker options, the north London club didn’t make a move for the Englishman, who is valued at £18m.

He said: “Callum Wilson was one certainly that was on Spurs’ list. However, as classically happens with Tottenham, other teams get involved, other teams look at him and that obviously means that no price can be knocked down.

Will Spurs regret not signing Wilson?

“From what I understand, it just got to the point where Tottenham felt with his injury record, and his age isn’t the normal Tottenham transfer profile, especially for a player that’s had injuries. They felt where it was getting up to, it was around the £17 million mark, but I think it is now around the £20 million mark that looks like Newcastle are potentially going to get him for. They just felt that with his injury history, it was just too much of a risk.”

TIF Thoughts…

Wilson has had issues with his knee over the last few years. Since the 2015/16 season, he has missed 63 games due to knee injuries and it shows why Spurs had concerns over his injury record.

In the 2019/20 Premier League season, Wilson scored only eight goals and picked up three assists in 35 games. Also, he is now 28 and perhaps doesn’t belong to the age profile that Spurs are looking at – as Gold points out.

Habib Diallo and Ollie Watkins are other strikers that have been linked with a move to Spurs. They are much younger options than Wilson, so it is no surprise that Spurs opted against the idea of going after the 28-year-old this summer.
