Jim Salveson, Marley Anderson and Matt Pidd discussed all the latest Premier League news on a recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast and during the show, the panel spent some time talking about Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli.

This comes after Alli was taken off at half-time in Spurs’ opening game of the 2020/21 Premier League season – a 1-0 loss to Everton.

As per WhoScored, Alli controlled the ball poorly twice in this game and failed to complete a single successful dribble. The stats website gave him an unimpressive overall rating of just 6.34 for his first-half performance in last weekend’s Premier League fixture.

In addition to that, Alli’s overall WhoScored rating in the Premier League has decreased each season since the 2016/17 campaign and during this recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast, Pidd criticised Alli and shared his disappointment at how he has developed in recent years.

The podcaster said: “He’s gone from being one of England’s next up-and-coming young stars to just being Dele Alli – the player that’s just average week in, week out.

“That is disappointing because when we [saw] him first burst onto the scene for Spurs he was scoring all types of goals, he was popping up here, there and everywhere and there [were] talks of him having this massive future ahead of him and all of a sudden, he’s just gone off the radar completely.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, as can be seen in what Pidd had to say, he clearly believes that Alli has thus far failed to live up to the potential that he once showed.

We feel that it is difficult to disagree with Pidd, considering that Alli’s overall WhoScored rating has decreased in the Premier League every season since the 2016/17 campaign and the player’s market value has also decreased from its highest point of £90m, which was his value back in December 2018, to his current valuation of £57.6m, as per Transfermarkt.

However, at 24 years old, it may be fair to say that time is still on his side and we believe that it is too soon to write him off altogether, given the promise he once showed, as explained by Pidd.
