Speaking recently on theĀ Football Writers Podcast, Michael Calvin, John Cross and Ade Oladipo discussed several topics following the opening round of Premier League fixtures, and in particular, the future of Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho.

Since taking over at Spurs back in November of last year, Mourinho has overseen 36 matches as the club’s manager, winning 16, drawing eight and losing 12.

1. Spurs signed Alfie Devine from which League One club?

Last season, he guided the club to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, their worst final league position since the 2013/14 season, when Tim Sherwood was the manager of the club.

In their first Premier League fixture this season, Spurs succumbed to a lacklustre defeat at home against Everton, which was the first time in his managerial career that Mourinho has lost on the opening matchday of a league campaign.

Daily Mirror journalist Cross believes that the 57-year-old’s performance in charge of the north London club could have an outcome on whether or not he gets another job at a “big” club in the future.

He said: “I think this is his last chance at a big club. This is last chance saloon, for me, for Mourinho, because here, he’s not going to be able to be the chequebook manager. He’s got to go back to being the coach and the inspirational figure.

“I think that this is such a big test for Mourinho. I’m reluctant to say that he’s not ‘got it’ still, because I still think Mourinho was so special that we have to believe that it’s in there somewhere, but he’s really got to show the old characteristics to lift Spurs again. Otherwise, other big clubs just won’t give him a similar chance in the future.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Cross’ comments, it is evident that the journalist believes that Tottenham could be Mourinho’s last chance to prove himself as a manager at the top level, and considering the loss to Everton in the club’s first game of the Premier League season, things certainly haven’t got off to the best of starts for the Portuguese manager.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Mourinho does with Spurs this year, as without the caveat of taking over as manager with some of the season having already been played, as was the case last year, he will have no one else to blame if Spurs do struggle again this term.
