On the latest episode of the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Ricky Sacks and Jamie Brown were joined by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano to discuss some of the transfer business that could occur at Tottenham Hotspur during the rest of the summer window.

One topic of discussion on the recent podcast, which was titled ‘Summer Transfer Window (Ft. Fabrizio Romano)’, was Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale. The Welsh international left the Lilywhites to join Los Blancos for a then world-record fee in 2013 and has since gone on to win four Champions League titles and two La Liga titles with the Spanish giants (per Transfermarkt).

Which player scored Spurs' first goal of the Premier League campaign?

However, his relationship with Zinedine Zidane now seems to be past its breaking point, with Madrid seemingly desperate to get rid of the 31-year-old this summer. As a result, it has been perhaps unsurprising to see him linked with a move back to North London.

Here’s what Romano had to say about Bale and the chances of him returning to the Lilywhites this summer:

“Jose Mourinho would love to work with Gareth Bale. The main problem, and I think it’s so difficult to see Gareth Bale back, is that [at the] moment, his situation with Real Madrid is always like a war. What is happening, in my opinion, is crazy because we are talking about a fantastic player who doesn’t seem interested in playing football for Real Madrid but at the same time, he wants to stay with the club.

“It’s so difficult in this kind of summer, where you can go ‘okay, here’s €60 million, I get Gareth Bale’. It’s not this kind of summer after the virus, so I think it’s so, so difficult to see Gareth Bale back to Tottenham this summer. I think one day, Gareth Bale can come back to Tottenham.”

TIF Thoughts…

Romano seems to suggest that due to the financial impact of the current viral outbreak, Spurs’ chances of re-signing Bale this summer are pretty slim, which is unsurprising when you consider the wages he reportedly earns at Real Madrid.

Can you see Bale ever returning?

However, the journalist is perhaps hopeful that the Welsh international will return to North London one day, where he would hopefully rediscover his love for the game.
