Speaking recently on The Extra Inch podcast, Chris Miller discussed whether or not ENIC could be lining up a sale of Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs have been under the ownership of ENIC since 2000 when the company purchased Tottenham from businessman Alan Sugar.
Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis are the two names most associated with the running of Tottenham on behalf of ENIC, and, despite the fact that the company have invested £800 million in building Spurs a new stadium, as well as having a hand in transforming the club from a mid-table side in the early 2000s to one which regularly challenges for European football, there are some Spurs fans who are unhappy with ENIC, and would like to see the club sold.
And, speaking on a recent episode of The Extra Inch podcast, Miller discussed whether or not a restructuring of staff at Spurs, including the appointment of Trevor Birch, could mean that ENIC are lining up the sale of the club.
He said: “The interesting thing about Birch is that he doesn’t tend to stay at clubs too long. He’s moved around a lot. Lots of people are making assumptions about the fact that we could be lining up a sale of the club. I think it’s too early for that. I don’t think Levy is in a position where he could sell at this point, there needs to be more value added to the club.
“We’ve got this huge stadium debt. I mean, it’s not a debt as such, but it’s like having a mortgage, essentially – it’s a debt we can manage. I think for him to get absolutely maximum value, if he is to ever sell – and he will sell eventually – but if he’s to look towards a sale, I think he needs to wait a little longer.
“So, I wouldn’t necessarily buy into that theory, although I appreciate where it’s come from because previously, Birch has been at a club and then they’ve been sold, and then he’s been at another club and they’ve been sold. So, there is some logic being applied there.”
Do you think ENIC have done a good job at Spurs?
Yes
No
TIF Thoughts…
From Miller’s comments, then, it would appear that he is not of the belief that Levy and co are looking to sell the club anytime soon, as he feels that they would need to add more value to Tottenham before being in a position to sell for a profit.
As such, for those Spurs fans who are of the ENIC out persuasion, it would appear that they will have to wait a little while longer yet to get their wish.
