Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting to a tweet that was recently posted by the Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder which shares the news that a friendly clash with Middlesbrough that had been scheduled for Monday has now been called off.
This comes after the Toon confirmed this news via their official Twitter account. The club’s tweet stated that this game ‘will now not take place’ and the club’s friendly clash with Stoke City at St. James’ Park on Saturday will now be their ‘final pre-season fixture ahead of the 2020/21 season.’
This cancellation comes after the Toon suffered a heavy defeat this past Tuesday in a match against Middlesbrough, as goals from Marcus Tavernier, Grant Hall, Stephen Walker, as well as two goals from Britt Assombalonga helped the Championship side to earn a 5-1 victory over Premier League Newcastle, with only Allan Saint-Maximin getting on the scoresheet for the Toon.
After Ryder relayed this news concerning the cancelled friendly via a tweet, plenty of Newcastle United supporters replied to his post to react to this news.
#nufc friendly with Boro on Monday now called off. Probably a good call.

In his tweet, Ryder stated that cancelling this friendly is ‘probably a good call,’ however, some Toon fans disagreed with this statement in response to the journalist’s tweet.
Why is it a good call? It was an opportunity for them to go out and put the result right and then move on from it

That sends out all the wrong messages.
Not much on the official NUFC site about the thrashing!— Lucy (@dunelmcuths) September 3, 2020
Literally not a good call, at all.

Meanwhile, other Newcastle fans replied to Ryder’s tweet to share that they believe Steve Bruce’s side would have suffered another heavy defeat in Monday’s clash with Middlesbrough had it not been cancelled.
Save us another pummelling

Are you annoyed by this news?
YES
NO
So, judging from the replies to Ryder’s post, it seems as though there are some mixed feelings amongst Toon fans over the cancellation of this friendly.
While some Newcastle supporters feel that the game should not have been cancelled, it seems that other Newcastle fans believe that their club would have suffered another defeat to the Championship side and don’t seem overly annoyed that the game will now not be going ahead.
Hopefully, for Newcastle fans, the club can put Tuesday’s 5-1 defeat to Middlesbrough behind them and end pre-season on a high note in Saturday’s clash with Stoke City before they start their 2020/21 league campaign against West Ham United on 12th September.
