A lot of Newcastle United fans have replied to a post from The Chronicle that contains a link to an article on their website that has comments from Eric Dier on the penalty incident during the Toon’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Who will the Toon play in the next round of the Carabao Cup after they beat Newport County on penalties?

Newcastle were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time as Andy Carroll headed the ball off Dier’s arm from close range.

After a VAR check and the referee having a look for himself, a penalty was awarded, and Callum Wilson fired it past Hugo Lloris to grab a point for Newcastle.

Dier has now been speaking about the incident and told the BBC’s Football Focus (via The Chronicle) that he was pushed in the back, and that was why his arms went up in the air.

It does appear as if Jamaal Lascelles gave Dier a slight push, but it still seems odd that the England international is blaming that for his handball.

Certainly, these Newcastle fans found it funny and have mocked Dier.

Does Dier need to move on?

Yes, he should forget about it

No, it was a poor decision

No, it was a poor decision

In our view, the penalty decision was harsh because his back is turned from the ball, and Carroll is very close to Dier; however, to then blame the push in the back seems odd, and these Toon fans have mocked him for this.

Referees in the Premier League have now been told to have more leniency on handballs in the box, so maybe that will make a difference, although even with this new leniency Dier would still have been punished for handball.

However, Dier is clearly not over the decision, but to blame the push from Lascelles seems strange and it is clear that these Toon fans think that Dier needs to move on.
