George Caulkin has been speaking on the latest episode of The Athletic’s Pod On The Tyne about the proposed takeover of Newcastle United.

A nice easy one to start off with. Who scored Newcastle's opening goal of the 2020/21 PL season?

Caulkin provided his view on the latest move from the club and Mike Ashley after it was announced that two lawyers had been appointed by the club to assist them in the dispute with the Premier League over the proposed takeover by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium.

It seems as if Caulkin believes that the possible legal challenge aims to get the Premier League to either approve the takeover or formally reject it, in order to give the club and Ashley an idea of what their next step may be.

He said: “I am told that what this [potential legal challenge] is about is trying to force an actual decision from the Premier League.

“If they have a rejection, if they have a formal rejection, then they can appeal it, and they can do something about it.

“There would be a certain amount of confidence that they might win an appeal, now whether that confidence is misplaced or not, I don’t know.

“So, that’s what has been going on behind the scenes; the lawyers are now involved [and] that’s very interesting.

“I should imagine it will all go quiet again for a while.”

Do you agree with Caulkin?

Yes, this is to make the PL decide

TIF Thoughts…

Last week, Newcastle released a statement claiming that the Premier League had formally rejected the club’s proposed takeover by PCP Capital Partners, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The league denied this claim, before it was announced that Ashley had appointed two lawyers and was intent on forcing through the takeover.

Certainly, it will be interesting to see what happens next in this takeover saga, but following the appointment of two lawyers, it is clear that Ashley and the consortium are not giving up on this takeover without a fight.
