To get things started a rather easy one. Who scored Newcastle's first league goal of the season?

After it was recently revealed that new Magpies signing Callum Wilson will wear the number nine shirt at Newcastle next season, taking the number off Joelinton, Caulkin shared his thoughts on the Brazilian.

He said: “Steve Bruce admitted at one point in the season that he wasn’t a natural goalscorer and you look at his stats, you look beyond just the evidence of your eyes, which suggests he’s not getting into the right areas, and it shows that he doesn’t have that instinct to score goals, to get into the right places to score goals, so they had to take remedial action.

“I think taking the number nine shirt off him makes perfect sense. He’s not that player and, you know, although we can get misty-eyed about the worth of that number, it does seem to sit very heavy on him.”

Newcastle signed Joelinton back in the 2019 summer transfer window for a club-record fee of £39.6 million (as per Transfermarkt) from German club Hoffenheim.

In his debut season at the club, the 24-year-old made 38 Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side, but only managed to score two league goals throughout the campaign, earning himself a season rating of 6.67/10 for his performances.

Do you think Joelinton will have a better season for Newcastle this year?

TIF Thoughts…

Given how Joelinton only managed to score two league goals last season, the arrival of Wilson and the fact that he has now taken the number nine shirt will hopefully be a big relief taken off the Brazilian’s shoulders so he doesn’t have the pressure of being Newcastle’s primary goalscorer.

It will be interesting to see if Joelinton manages to have a better season for Newcastle this year than he did in the last one as Wilson enters the fray.
