A lot of Newcastle United fans have replied to a post from Lee Ryder that contains a link to an article in the Evening Chronicle including quotes from Steve Bruce on Matty Longstaff.

A nice easy one to start off with. Who scored Newcastle's opening goal of the 2020/21 PL season?

Amid previous talk that the young midfielder could be on his way to Udinese, the Toon boss claimed that the 20-year-old ‘never wanted to go‘, but people ‘turned his head’ and that ‘a conversation with his mam and dad‘ sorted out the contract extension which Longstaff signed last month.

Bruce also questioned why he would have wanted to go to Udinese in the first place, and these comments have not gone down well with these Newcastle fans, who question why Longstaff has chosen to stay with Bruce.

Do you think Bruce is right?

No, he should have went somewhere else

The 20-year-old, who is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, signed a new deal with Newcastle in August but did receive a huge contract offer from Udinese to move to Serie A, but eventually decided to stay on Tyneside and compete with the other midfielders in the Toon’s squad.

There were reports that Longstaff could have ended up at Watford because of the Pozzo family links between Udinese and the Hornets, but he decided that Newcastle was the place for him, and it is clear that Bruce is happy about that.

This post continued to draw the attention of many Newcastle fans, who are baffled by the manager’s words.

Longstaff made 15 senior appearances for Newcastle in all competitions last season, scoring three goals, and he will no doubt be hoping he can add to those this season.

It will be interesting to see how much game time he gets for Newcastle this season after deciding to put his faith in the club and Bruce by signing his new deal.
