Chris Waugh has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic’s Pod On The Tyne about all things relating to Newcastle United.

A nice easy one to start off with. Who scored Newcastle's opening goal of the 2020/21 PL season?

One of the topics that he spent some time on was the Toon’s transfer business and what they intend to do before the transfer window closes.

It seems as if the Toon have not changed their mind on what they want despite losing 3-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, and have targeted a new centre-back and striker, with both likely to be loan deals.

Waugh said: “Newcastle’s transfer plans haven’t changed as of Sunday – as bad as Sunday was – there were already areas that we’re looking to strengthen and that remains centre-back and striker.

“[That will be] probably on loan, they still have two domestic loan slots; obviously you can bring in more loans from abroad as well, and basically, I think part of the strategy is they’re waiting to see what happens with the ‘big six’ clubs, who might become available.

“I think Bruce still expects there to be a few bits of business.”

Do you agree with the club's transfer plans?

Yes, both a striker and a centre-back would complete the squad

No, we need more than that

TIF Thoughts…

Newcastle have so far added Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick, Ryan Fraser and Mark Gillespie to their squad in this transfer window, and that has cost them around £35m, which was reported to be their budget for the summer – so it is no surprise that Newcastle are thought to now be looking at loan deals.

The Toon have five players who are natural at centre-back, but with Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett still injured, we could well expect to see Newcastle looking to strengthen there.

In terms of their options at striker, they have four players who are natural strikers. However, Dwight Gayle is injured, while Andy Carroll has not scored since he returned to Tyneside last summer.

Joelinton has managed just two league goals for the club, leaving them with just Wilson as a reliable Premier League goalscorer.

So, you can see why they would want another striker.

It will be intriguing to see if Newcastle strengthen the positions mentioned by Waugh before the window closes.
