Liverpool journalist Matt Addison has shared some insight into Georginio Wijnaldum’s immediate future with the Merseyside club.

This comes after Addison recently made an appearance on the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he talked through all of the latest news topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side at the moment.

After it was recently reported that Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is interested in signing Wijnaldum this summer, Addison shared this latest update on the Dutch midfielder’s current contract situation at Liverpool.

He said: “At this moment, still no deal in terms of a new contract or anything like that. He’s still on the same contract as when he signed, Gini Wijnaldum, from back in 2016.

“That was a five-year deal, [it] obviously runs out next summer. So, at the moment, no active talks, there’s been no active talks since [the pandemic] broke out.”

As Addison mentioned in the podcast, Liverpool signed Wijnaldum on a five-year deal back in 2016 for a fee of £24.75 million from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

Since then, the 29-year-old has made a total of 187 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score 19 goals and provide 16 assists during his time at Anfield.

Two of his more memorable goals for Liverpool came against Barcelona during their famous 4-0 win over the Spanish club in their 2018/19 Champions League campaign.

TIF Thoughts…

With Liverpool apparently holding no new contract talks with Wijnaldum as of yet as Addison claimed in the podcast, this gives the impression that they aren’t too concerned about trying to tie down the midfielder to a new deal this summer and could well be confident that they will be able to do it later.

However, if Barcelona do come in and try and take Wijnaldum away from Liverpool this summer, it remains to be seen if he could be persuaded to leave the Merseyside club if the right opportunity for him to do so comes along.
