2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

One of the teams that he spent some time on was Liverpool and their pursuit of Thiago Alcantara.

It seems as if Jurgen Klopp wants the 29-year-old because he will be ideal for the Reds’ midfield, while the player wants the move, but FSG are not paying the fee Bayern want, which is over €30m (£26.96m).

He said: “Thiago we know is another deal that has been set up by Klopp.

“He’s a player he really wants, he believes will fit into the midfield, sort some of the problems they have had with the midfield.

“He’s been looking for a long time for a player who can provide the physical effort and play the pressing game that is essential to being part of Liverpool’s midfield and be a more creative force than the individuals he has in there at the moment.

“Bayern are prepared to let the player go, they’ve told him, ‘okay, you can leave if you’re not going to sign a new contract with us’, and he has, I think, one year left at Bayern, but [they] need over €30m as a transfer fee.

“So the deal is there. The player’s terms are there, the player wants to go, Klopp has set it up, FSG aren’t paying the money required to make it happen.”

TIF Thoughts…

Liverpool might have won the league last season, but they have only spent money on Konstantinos Tsimikas, while they missed out on Timo Werner and could yet miss out on Thiago – with Manchester United interested – if they don’t pay the fee Bayern want.

The former Barcelona man is valued at £43.2m by Transfermarkt, so the Reds would arguably be getting a big discount on Thiago’s value if they agree to Bayern’s demands.

Last season, he was sublime as he earned an average rating of 7.47/10 in the Bundesliga and 7.76 in the Champions League.

You would think Liverpool should be all over this, but with less than a week until they start their Premier League campaign, Thiago is still a Bayern Munich player, but as Castles points out, it is very clear what the Bundesliga champions want, and so it appears to be up to the Reds to sort this deal out.
