Speaking recently on the Ask Ornstein YouTube show, David Ornstein provided some financial insight into Liverpool’s deal to sign Thiago Alcantara.

After joining Bayern Munich from Barcelona in what was a £22.5 million deal back in 2013, Thiago went on to make 235 appearances for Die Bayern, scoring 31 goals and providing 37 assists along the way.

First up in this Jordan Henderson quiz, how old is the Liverpool captain?

Last season, the Spanish international was influential in the club’s success both domestically and in Europe, featuring 24 times in the Bundesliga, scoring three goals and averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7.47 – ranking him as the club’s fourth-best performer in the league – as well as 10 times in the Champions League, providing two assists and averaging a highly impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.76.

However, earlier this summer, it was reported that Thiago would not be signing a new deal with the German giants, and that, should a club meet Bayern’s asking price, he would be happy to leave over the summer transfer window, with the midfielder’s reported preference being a move to Liverpool.

This move eventually transpired, with Jurgen Klopp landing the £43.2 million-rated 29-year-old in a £27 million deal.

And, speaking on his YouTube show, Ornstein discussed some of the financials involved in Liverpool’s deal for Thiago.

He said: “The deal really came together last week, in the early part, around Monday-time, I think there was a breakthrough in talks that had been taking place over the weekend.

“Liverpool dispatched their club doctor, Jim Moxon, to begin the medical process in Germany, and then it was done for a fee in the region of €30 million.

“Liverpool will pay around £5 million per year for each of the four years of Thiago’s contract, plus some performance-related add-ons, so it would appear to be a fantastic transfer from a footballing and a financial perspective.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Ornstein’s comments, it is clear that the journalist believes that the club completed an excellent deal for Thiago, both in terms of the quality of his footballing ability, as well as from a financial point of view.

And, we have to say, considering the fact that Thiago – the ninth-best player in last season’s Champions League – cost Liverpool just £27m, the deal does look to be one of extremely good value for the Merseyside club.
