Speaking recently on the Football Writers Podcast, Michael Calvin, Adrian Clarke and Jordan Jarrett-Bryan discussed multiple topics ahead of the start of the new Premier League season, and in particular, the situation of Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster.

Since moving to Liverpool’s academy from Chelsea’s youth setup back in 2015, Brewster has impressed through the various Liverpool age groups, scoring five goals and providing four assists over 11 appearances for the U18 side and notching 13 goals and 10 assists over 28 appearances for the U23 team.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

Last season, the England U21 international was sent out on loan to Swansea City, where he featured 22 times in the Championship for the Welsh side, scoring an impressive 11 goals and averaging a WhoScored match rating of 7/10.

As a result of these performances, it has been reported that as many as six Premier League clubs are interested in the forward, with Liverpool said to be considering the idea of selling the £4.86 million-rated youngster.

However, Clarke believes that this would not be a good idea for Jurgen Klopp’s side, as in his opinion, Brewster could follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, whom Manchester City sold for £7.05 million back in 2017 – and is now valued at £105.3 million.

In response to a question asking whether he believes Liverpool should accept an offer of £25 million for Brewster, Clarke said: “No, not for me. In two seasons’ time, he could be a £100 million player. Look at Jadon Sancho – [City] made that call, didn’t they? They let him go relatively cheaply to Borussia Dortmund – unproven, of course, a little like Rhian Brewster – and look what Sancho’s done, and look how much it’s going to cost to bring him back.

“I’d certainly want to give him an opportunity in the first team before I sold him on. Unless, of course, Klopp’s had a good look at him and he doesn’t see enough and that he doesn’t back him to make it at Liverpool. If that’s the case, then, of course, you cash in, but the mood music I get with Rhian Brewster is that he’s part of Klopp’s plans.”

TIF Thoughts…

From Clarke’s comments, it is obvious that he believes Brewster should be given a chance in the Liverpool first team before the club sell him on, which, in our opinion, considering his fine form for Swansea in the Championship last season, is a very sensible idea indeed.
