Leeds United journalist Phil Hay has been discussing the Yorkshire club’s transfer plans for the remainder of the current summer window.

This comes after Hay recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Ornstein & Chapman Podcast where he spoke about the latest goings-on at Elland Road.

Starting with an easy one how many points did Leeds end the season with?

After recently securing the signings of Rodrigo and Robin Koch over the weekend, Hay revealed his thoughts on what he thinks the club will be looking to do for the rest of the window.

He said: “My understanding is that Bielsa is starting to soften on another centre-back. I think it’s likely that they will bring somebody else in. [They’ve] been linked with a player in Croatia [Josko Gvardiol]. They’re also keen on Axel Tuanzebe over at Manchester United and they will do another winger, number 10 type to make sure that they are covered there, but I think four or five signings tops, will be as far as they go in this window – I don’t think it will be excessive.

“So, financially they might end up spending something close to what Fulham and Villa did after they were promoted, but I think in terms of the recruitment, it will look very different when it’s finished.”

So far this season, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have spent £61.78 million on incoming transfers such as Rodrigo, Koch, Joe Gelhardt, Cody Drameh, Illan Meslier and Helder Costa (per Transfermarkt).

As Hay mentioned in the podcast, Fulham spent a total of £104.85 million on transfers for their 2018/19 season after they were promoted from the Championship, only to be relegated again at the end of the season.

Additionally, last summer saw Aston Villa spend a total of £143.19 million after winning promotion but they managed to avoid relegation at the end of the 2019/20 season.

TIF Thoughts…

It appears as though Hay still thinks Leeds will bring in a couple of new faces to Elland Road before the end of the current window in addition to the ones they have already signed.

The fact that the club have spent so much money already and are still looking at spending some more, shows that they are looking to be in the best shape possible to compete in the Premier League for the 2020/21 season.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see which players the club manage to sign before the window shuts.
