LeedsLive’s Beren Cross recently took part in a Q&A, during which he commented on a variety of topics concerning Leeds United.

The Leeds United journalist talked about the current status of Gaetano Berardi during this Q&A, with one particular reader asking the Whites reporter if the club was ‘hopeful’ about Berardi making an injury comeback this season.

Nice easy one to start with, who scored Leeds' first goal of the PL season?

Cross replied to this question by saying: ‘Well, technically he’s a free agent at the moment. He’s hopeful they will get a new deal sorted for him, but there will need to be clear medical progress.

‘The fact there has been zero acknowledgement of his time with the club so far would suggest he remains in their plans. It’s a long-shot to get him up to Premier League level before the season finishes, isn’t it?’

Do you think Berardi will re-join Leeds United?

TIF Thoughts…

Judging by Cross’ comments on the Berardi situation, it seems as though he believes that the club may still have the defender in their plans for the 2020/21 campaign, despite the fact that he is a free agent at present.

The defender became a free agent at the beginning of August, however, his Leeds contract had originally been set to expire at the end of June, with the 32-year-old opting to sign a short-term extension with the club ‘to ensure he could see out the delayed season run-in’.

He subsequently suffered an ACL tear in the Whites’ penultimate game of the 2019/20 Championship season versus Derby County – an injury which could see him spend a total of nine months on the sidelines.

Considering that he took the risk of signing a short-term extension with the club in order to see out the 2019/20 campaign, we feel it would be harsh of the Whites not to show loyalty to Berardi, so hopefully, the player does remain in Leeds’ plans, as Cross suggested he may, and once the defender makes progress on his recovery from injury, he can re-join the club that he helped to win the Championship title last season.
