Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been discussing Everton’s recent spending in the transfer market.

Recently, a report from The Times explained how the Premier League has ‘relaxed’ its profitability and sustainability rules due to the current global pandemic.

It was stated that clubs will also be able to write off any losses or extra spending which has been caused due to the viral outbreak.

Following the report last week, the Toffees have announced three signings in the form of Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure which have set the club back a combined fee of around £53.7m.

So, in the latest episode of The Price of Football podcast, Maguire discussed the relaxations in the rules and mentioned Everton’s transfer business.

To kick off this quiz on Everton's 2019/20 season, which side did the Toffees' first win of the term come against?

He said: “It now looks as if Financial Fair Play rules – and this is mirroring what has happened under UEFA – the Financial Fair Play rules are now going to be assessed over two seasons instead of one, and this might explain some of the behaviour we’ve seen.

“I think the most noticeable impact on this is Everton. Everton lost £112m last season and they’d been noticeably quiet in the transfer market this summer.

“As soon as that pronouncement went through, in terms of the relaxation of FFP, effectively it was time to [spend], as far as the transfer market is concerned.

“So, they’ve signed James Rodriguez, they’ve signed Doucoure, they’ve signed Allan. So, [as] soon as that announcement went out, ‘£60m, let’s get that chequebook a-flying.'”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the finance expert had to say, he believes that the relaxation on profitability and sustainability rules played a role in Everton’s recent acquisitions.

Are you bothered about the motives behind Everton's recent signings?

However, with the Toffees now looking incredibly well-stocked in the centre of midfield following their signings (per Transfermarkt), perhaps Everton supporters will care little for the motives behind the arrivals.
