According to a recent report, Crystal Palace are planning to use the funds received for their agreed sale of Alexander Sorloth towards a move for Brentford winger Said Benrahma.

A report by The Guardian states that Palace are splitting the £20 million fee they are set to receive from RB Leipzig for the 24-year-old forward with Trabzonspor, the club where Sorloth was in the middle of a two-year loan spell, and are planning to put their £10 million towards the purchase of Benrahma, with Brentford demanding around £25 million for the winger.

The report continues by also stating that the club’s attempts to sign the £9.45 million-rated 25-year-old do not hinge on the potential departure of Wilfried Zaha, who has previously informed the club that he would like to leave in the current transfer window.

TIF Thoughts…

While it could be argued that £25 million appears to be a great deal of money to risk on a player who has never played in the Premier League, Benrahma’s season in the Championship last year does go a long way to suggesting that he is one of the better players in the second tier of English football, and would therefore seem capable of making the step up to the top flight.

Over his 46 Championship fixtures last term, which included the Bees’ run to the play-off final, the winger scored 17 goals and provided nine assists, averaging a highly impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.49/10 – ranking him as the league’s best player (min. 2 appearances) – as well as earning 11 WhoScored Man of the Match awards.

As such, it would indeed seem as if Benrahma is ready to challenge himself with Premier League football, and with Sorloth’s expected sale meaning that the south London side would only theoretically have to stump up £15 million of their own money to reach the asking price of the Algerian international, it is our opinion that this is a risk well worth taking.
