Mat Kendrick of the Claret & Blue podcast has been discussing the form of the Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn following their Premier League fixture versus Sheffield United on Monday night.

Dean Smith’s side won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ezri Konsa in the second half. Villa debutant Emiliano Martinez made an impressive save to deny John Lundstram from the penalty spot when it was 0-0 but it was an established favourite who has come in for some criticism following his display from Kendrick.

First up in this Tyrone Mings quiz, how old is the Villa defender?

When discussing a number of individual performances, here is what the podcaster had to say regarding the £14.4m-rated 25-year-old:

“McGinn was a little bit anonymous, for me, we’re still seeing the ‘post-lockdown’ McGinn rather than the ‘promotion-winning season’ McGinn or the ‘first couple of months of last season’ McGinn.”

McGinn joined Aston Villa from Hibernian back in August 2018 in a deal reportedly worth £2.79m (as per Transfermarkt) and since his arrival, he has made 76 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and providing his teammates with 13 assists.

TIF Thoughts…

According to WhoScored.com, McGinn’s performance against Chris Wilder’s side earned him a rating of 6.39/10. He had two attempts at goal and his pass success rate was 79.6%. Taking that into consideration, you can understand why this particular Villa supporter was less than impressed by the player’s display on the night.

During the 2019/20 campaign, the Scottish midfielder made 28 Premier League appearances for which he was awarded a solid rating of 7/10 despite Kendrick suggesting his performances post-lockdown were not up to standard.
