Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has shared an update on the club’s pursuit of Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-themed podcast 1874, where he discussed a variety of subjects related to Dean Smith’s side.

In this 2019/20 season quiz, do you remember who scored Villa's first PL goal of the season?

On the topic of Martinez, who has been recently linked with a move to Villa Park this summer, Evans shared this update on the matter.

He said: “I spoke about Emiliano Martinez, the Arsenal goalkeeper, who has been on Villa’s radar for the past five or six weeks now. Villa lodged a second bid, believed to be close to Arsenal’s £20 million asking price over the last couple of days and they are just waiting to see whether they can get their man now.

“I think he’ll be a great signing if they could get that over the line.”

The 28-year-old, who is currently valued at £7.2 million, made his debut for Arsenal back in September 2012. Since then, the Argentine has made 38 senior appearances for the north London club in total, during which he has conceded 41 goals and kept 16 clean sheets along the way (per Transfermarkt).

During Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final last month, Martinez earned himself an impressive match rating of 7.02/10 for his performance (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

It sounds as though Villa are pretty serious about signing Martinez this summer and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal accept Villa’s second bid for the shot-stopper.

However, with Villa currently having Tom Heaton, Orjan Nyland, Lovre Kalinic and Jed Steer in their squad at the moment, you would wonder where Martinez would fit into the squad at this moment in time.
