Aston Villa journalist Gregg Evans has been talking about Villa’s current owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.

This comes after Evans recently made an appearance on The Athletic’s Villa-themed podcast 1874 where he spoke about a variety of topics concerning the Birmingham club.

Jack Grealish quiz: First up, how old is the Villa captain?

On the subject of Villa’s current owners, Evans had this to say on the duo.

He said: “Everything’s gone right for them so far, hasn’t it, I mean, if you think of it, they came in when Villa were right on the brink, got promoted in the first season, took them to the Premier League, kept them up.

“Last season was a difficult one because they had to completely rebuild the team, but they also decided that they weren’t going to spend heavily on wages and that was a little bit of a risk because you think, well, if you don’t push the boat out on wages you might not always get the top quality players that you need to stay in the Premier League, but it worked for them.

“Okay, it might have been a little bit fortunate, staying up by a point on the last game of the season, but it worked and now you can see the real drive and desire to improve the team and to start spending some of that cash and flexing their financial muscle.”

Edens and Sawiris bought the majority control of the Birmingham-based club from former owner Tony Xia back in July 2018.

Since then, Villa made their way out of the Championship by beating Derby County in the 2018/19 play-off final and then managed to avoid relegation at the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

So far in the current summer transfer window, Villa have splashed out on players such as Matty Cash, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins, spending a total sum of £57.56 million (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

It’s clear that the club have been successful in their aim to get back to the Premier League since Edens and Sawiris took over back in 2018, as Evans mentioned in the podcast.

Now that the club have secured some new players this summer, this shows that Villa are focused on trying to have a better season than they did last season after they finished in 17th place with 35 points.
