Aston Villa journalist Dan Bardell has been sharing his thoughts about Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi after his performance in the club’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Burton Albion in midweek.

This comes after Bardell recently made an appearance on The Villa View Podcast to reflect on the recent cup victory.

On the topic of El Ghazi, Bardell had this to say on the winger after his watching his performance in the match.

He said: “There’s something wrong with him. I think his head has just dropped completely. I think [his] confidence is absolutely on the floor – that never helps – but if people like [Henri] Lansbury and El Ghazi, they’re not taking games like this by the scruff of the neck, then they’re not going to be playing in the Premier League either.”

Villa signed El Ghazi on a permanent basis from French side LOSC Lille back in the 2019 summer transfer window for a fee of £8.1 million after he originally spent the 2018/19 season on loan at the Birmingham club (per Transfermarkt).

Overall, the 25-year-old has made a total of 78 appearances for Dean Smith’s side in which he has managed to score 13 goals and provide 13 assists along the way.

For his performance in the game against Burton, El Ghazi, who is currently valued at £7.2 million, earned himself a fairly decent match rating of 6.95/10 before he was substituted towards the end of the second half (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

Despite racking up a respectable match rating for himself in midweek, it seems that the winger’s performance against Burton didn’t convince Bardell that El Ghazi is ready for another season with Villa in the Premier League.

Hopefully, for El Ghazi and other Villa fans, his display in midweek gave him some confidence with Villa’s Premier League match against Sheffield United on the horizon.
